There were no forklifts or pallets in 1936, nor sophisticated supply and logistics methods. Still, from humble beginnings at Brisbane's Roma Street markets, Stan and Wally Carter founded fresh produce wholesale business S&W Carter – marking the beginning of our company story.
Stan and Wally were joined 28 years later by George Spencer, the husband of Stan’s daughter Lee, and in 1964 the company relocated to the Brisbane Markets site at Rocklea. From there began a period of enormous growth for the business.
We are now a company of many parts - Carter & Spencer Group’s farming, packing, supply, distribution, export and import operations include offices in Brisbane, North Queensland, New Zealand and California; a packing facility in Bundaberg, the Spencer Ranch farming operation in Wallaville, and a cutting-edge greenhouse growing facility in Moore Park. Carter & Spencer is proudly the oldest fresh produce company at the Rocklea Markets under same family ownership – with Managing Director Craig Spencer at the helm, and sons Chris and Matt Spencer working on the front line of sales and procurement.
Historically, Carter & Spencer has not only participated in, but greatly shaped the dynamic Brisbane fruit and vegetable industry. We trade on the wholesale floor at the Brisbane Markets. Our commitment to this community exists as strongly today as it did over 80 years ago.
After 50 years of establishing ourselves as experts in fresh produce, the Carter & Spencer team is charged for the future, with globalisation of fruit and vegetables – and innovations in technology to support this – at the very centre of what we do. We are proud to represent Australian fresh produce, a commodity highly sought after at home and globally.
Carter & Spencer has grown hand in hand with the Australian fresh produce industry, and we are looking forward to continuing to service independent retailers, secondary wholesalers, supermarkets and chains nationally from our home at the Brisbane Markets.
